Injury Evaluation 101: When To Get Checked And What To Expect

An injury can happen when you least expect it – during a workout, at work, or even while doing everyday activities around the house. While some minor aches and pains resolve on their own, others need medical attention to heal properly. Knowing when to get checked can help prevent long-term problems and get you back to feeling your best sooner.

Should You Get Your Injury Checked Out?

So, how do you know when an injury needs medical care? If you’re experiencing ongoing pain, swelling, bruising, limited movement, numbness, or weakness, it’s a good idea to be evaluated. Injuries that don’t improve after a few days, worsen over time, or interfere with daily activities should also be checked. Even injuries that seem minor at first can turn into bigger issues if left untreated.

What Is Involved In An Evaluation?

At East Jones Family Medicine, injury evaluations start with listening. We’ll ask about important details like how the injury happened, what symptoms you’re experiencing, and how it’s affecting your movement or routine. From there, a physical exam helps assess strength, range of motion, and areas of tenderness or instability. If needed, in-office diagnostic tools like X-rays or other testing may be used to get a clearer picture of what’s going on.

Can I Be Treated On Site?

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the injury. For many patients, care may include rest recommendations, activity modifications, medications to reduce pain or inflammation, or referrals for physical therapy. In some cases, joint injections or additional imaging may be appropriate to support healing and relieve discomfort. For injuries beyond our scope (like fractures), we will refer you an appropriate medical expert for further treatment.

One of the biggest benefits of having an injury evaluated by your primary care provider is continuity of care. At East Jones, our standard of care considers your overall health, activity level, and medical history when creating a treatment plan – so care is tailored specifically to you.
