Understanding Medical Cannabis Certification In Mississippi

East Jones Family Medicine is now offering medical cannabis certification exams and recertifications for qualifying patients in Mississippi. This service allows patients to take the first step toward legally participating in our state’s medical cannabis program (MMCP). Before applying for a medical cannabis card, patients must receive certification from a qualified medical provider. Our goal is to guide patients through the process while ensuring they receive safe, medically supervised care and access to treatment when appropriate. Let’s talk more about it.

What Medical Cannabis Certification Means

In Mississippi, a medical professional must evaluate a patient and determine whether they have a qualifying medical condition that may benefit from medical cannabis. Licensed providers such as physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants can issue a written certification if they believe the patient could receive medical or palliative benefits from cannabis treatment.

During the certification appointment, one of our providers will review your medical history, discuss symptoms, and evaluate whether medical cannabis may be appropriate for your condition. Mississippi law requires that an initial certification appointment include an in-person evaluation to establish a patient-provider relationship.

If we determine that you qualify, we will issue a written certification that allows you to apply for a medical cannabis card through the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP).

Apply For Access

Once a patient receives a medical cannabis certification, the next step is to apply online through the MMCP. After approval, patients receive a registry identification card that allows them to purchase medical cannabis from licensed dispensaries in Mississippi.

Mississippi also requires follow-up care to monitor treatment. Patients typically need a follow-up evaluation within six months so we can assess how well the treatment is working and make any necessary adjustments.

Renewals And Recertification

Medical cannabis cards in Mississippi must be renewed regularly, which means patients will need periodic recertification visits. During a recertification appointment, we’ll review your progress, evaluate ongoing symptoms, and determine whether continued certification is appropriate.
